カタカナの Drama!

Welcome to the カタカナの Drama post! これはさん examples of カタカナ。I'll tell you a little about このカタカナ。そして、I'll try to offer a bit of insight about their usage. It may not be completely correct, but we can only do our best, ね？じゃあ。はじめましょう！

きれいなシャツです、ね？

At first, このシャツ doesn't seem very special. But it is! On このシャツ is the poem アメニモマケズ、by みやざわけんじ。If you look close enough, you may see some かんじ。However, originally this poem was written entirely in カタカナ。It was found posthumously, so nobody really knows why he did this. It may have been because he lived in a rural area and カタカナ was just more accessible. It's also possible that it was a purely stylistic choice. Apparently, in the past カタカナ has been perceived as masculine, so perhaps he wanted to use that connotation to create a distinctly masculine voice in this poem. アメニモマケズはうつくしいですよ。よみませんか？

こわいです、ね？　Worst. Virus. Ever.

Surely you've seen The Matrix! このえいがはとてもゆうめいです。In it, we see this screen pretty often. What many people don't know is that この screen has たくさん backwards カタカナとばんごう！どうして？わかりません. To my knowledge, they're not words- just random characters. Maybe カタカナ was used here to create a mood. にほん is known for its technology, so maybe the カタカナ was used to create a futuristic, scifi mood.  おもしろいです、ね？

これはなんですか？Typography!

Lastly, we have この work of art. Here, カタカナ  is used for artistic purposes. There's a style of art called typography: art made up entirely of letters. Well, characters. In this case, カタカナ！In my opinion, much of the カタカナ in まんがは typography ですが,これは definitely an example of typography. Which reminds me- らいげつわたしはびじゅつかんへいきます！Lit Hum のクラスといきます。Maybe I'll see some カタカナ typography!

Candy from a friend!

せんしゅうわたしはわたしのとまだちにラムネあめだまをもらいました。Last week, my friend gave me candy. わたしのとまだちはれいなさん。れいなさんはとうきょうからきました。ラムネ  is her favorite kind of candy. ラムネはすきです。わたしもすきです。ラムネあめだまはかわいいとおいしいす.

これは caramel, クッピ candy that melts in your mouth, and "whistle candy" that whistles when you blow through it.
