At first, このシャツ doesn't seem very special. But it is! On このシャツ is the poem アメニモマケズ、by みやざわけんじ。If you look close enough, you may see some かんじ。However, originally this poem was written entirely in カタカナ。It was found posthumously, so nobody really knows why he did this. It may have been because he lived in a rural area and カタカナ was just more accessible. It's also possible that it was a purely stylistic choice. Apparently, in the past カタカナ has been perceived as masculine, so perhaps he wanted to use that connotation to create a distinctly masculine voice in this poem. アメニモマケズはうつくしいですよ。よみませんか?

Surely you've seen The Matrix! このえいがはとてもゆうめいです。In it, we see this screen pretty often. What many people don't know is that この screen has たくさん backwards カタカナとばんごう!どうして?わかりません. To my knowledge, they're not words- just random characters. Maybe カタカナ was used here to create a mood. にほん is known for its technology, so maybe the カタカナ was used to create a futuristic, scifi mood. おもしろいです、ね?

ReplyDeleteWow very interesting post. Apparently, during the time when Miyazawa Kenji wrote this, most text books were written in katakana. It is interesting how the rules for katakana have changed over time. For the second example I guess this was made by foreigners who may not have necessarily known Japanese! very interesting. For the third one, it seems like they are all onomatopoeia. Looking at the katakana as form rather than letters is creative! Was it done by a Japanese artist?
ReplyDeleteGood examples and analysis! I heard that The Matrix was inspired by a Japanese animation "攻殻機動隊 (GHOST IN THE SHELL)" and this screen appears in the animation too. The animation version does not have カタカナ though.
